Description
This course examines the critical role that human resources management plays in the success of today's modern business organization. Human resource management is defined, and its contribution to organization effectiveness is identified. Particular emphasis is placed on the linkage between internal organizational needs, the legal and regulatory environment and external competitive influences, all of which determine organizational success. Elements of study include equal employment opportunity, staffing the organization, compensation and employee relations.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will:
- Be familiarized with the various aspects of managing human resources in the modern business organization.
- Recognize how the legal environment and the implementation of equal employment opportunity influence all areas of human resource management.
- Identify the use of information technology and its value in the management of human resources.
- Have an awareness of job analysis and design, human resource planning, recruitment and selection.
- Identify the linkage between organizational strategy and human resource strategy.
- Be able to identify the value in training and developing all employees, including performance appraisal systems and career planning.
- Explore the various organizational reward systems used in compensating employees and to identify the effectiveness of these systems on organizational performance.
- Be introduced to the legal environment and structure of unions, the collective bargaining process, the broader areas of employee relations and employee health and safety.
